Introduction and Help


The main page of the Map Tool contains a map of the State of Illinois, a tool bar that contains commands for interacting with the map, and a layer list for selecting which layers to display. To add layers to the map, click the check box next to the layer name, then click the Refresh Map button. The active layer also is set in the layer list. The active layer is used by the Query, Hyperlink, Find, and Identify tools. The tool bar commands are listed below.

Tool Bar Commands
Icon Name Description
Overview Map Overview Map Toggles overview map display off/on.
Toggle Legend/Layer Toggle Legend/Layer Toggles between viewing legend or layer list.
Select Select by Rectangle Select features by rectangle and view the attribute values.
Clear Selection Clear Selection Clears the selected/highlighted features from the map.
Zoom In Zoom In Zooms in on position you click or box you drag on the map.
Zoom Out Zoom Out Zooms out from position you click on the map.
Zoom Full Extent Zoom Full Extent Zooms to the full extent of the map.
Zoom Last Zoom Last Zooms to the previous extent.
Pan Pan Pans map as you drag mouse across the map.
Hyperlink Hyperlink Click on symbol then position in active layer for hyperlink.
Identify" Identify List attributes of features you click on in the map view.
Query Query Queries active layer based on query expression you construct.
Measure Measure Measures distances on map. 
Print Print Prints the map and legend to a preformatted map layout.
Metadata Metadata Metadata about the shapefiles used in map.
