Tool Bar Commands

Icon	Name	Description
	Overview Map	Toggles overview map display off/on.
	Toggle Legend/Layer	Toggles between viewing legend or layer list.
	Select by Rectangle	Select features by rectangle and view the attribute values.
	Clear Selection	Clears the selected/highlighted features from the map.
	Zoom In	Zooms in on position you click or box you drag on the map.
	Zoom Out	Zooms out from position you click on the map.
	Zoom Full Extent	Zooms to the full extent of the map.
	Zoom Last	Zooms to the previous extent.
	Pan	Pans map as you drag mouse across the map.
	Hyperlink	Click on symbol then position in active layer for hyperlink.
	Identify	List attributes of features you click on in the map view.
	Query	Queries active layer based on query expression you construct.
	Measure	Measures distances on map.
	Print	Prints the map and legend to a preformatted map layout.
	Metadata	Metadata about the shapefiles used in map.
	Help	Introduction and Help.

How to identify features:

• Click the Active button for a layer in the Layers list to make it active.
• Click the Identify tool.
• Click a feature on the map.
• The results of the Identify are shown in the Identify Results window.

How to build a query expression:

• Click the Active button for a layer in the Layers list to make it active.
• Click the Query tool.
• Select a field to query.
• Select an operator to be used in the expression.
• Type a value or click "Get Samples" and select a value for the expression. The % character can be used to match any character(s) when using the "LIKE" operator. For example, if one is querying the streams layer, entering "Illinois%" will match both "Illinois" and "Illinois River", while entering "Illinois" will only match "Illinois".
• Verify that the query expression is correct, then click "Add to Query String".
• Click Execute to perform the query.
• Click on the record number in the results to pan/zoom to that feature.

How to measure a distance:

• Click the Measure tool.
• Click the first point, wait for it to appear on screen.
• Click the next point. The distance is shown on the upper-left of the screen.
• Click the Clear Selection button to start a new measurement.
• The units of measure can be changed using the Set Units tool.

How to select features:

• Click the Active button for a layer in the Layers list to make it active.
• Click one of the Select Features tools - either Select by Rectangle or Select by Line/Polygon.
• Click and drag a rectangle for selecting features by Rectangle. To select by Line or Polygon click a point, wait for it to appear on the screen, then click the next point, etc. When finished entering points, click on the Complete Line & Select or the Complete Polygon & Select button.

How to print a map:

• Click the Print tool.
• If desired, change the map title.
• Click the Create Print Page button.
• A new browser window will open with the map displayed, then click the File then Print menu items.
